Tips for Hosting a Party at Home

Updated: Oct 8, 2023

Hosting a party at home can be such a fun and rewarding experience, but it can also be stressful if you don't plan properly. From deciding on a theme to preparing food and drinks, there are a lot of details to consider when hosting a successful party.

Here are the top 10 best practices for hosting a party at home that will help ensure you and your guests have a great time and you don't get overwhelmed.

  1. Plan ahead: Decide on the date, time, and guest list well in advance so that everyone can add your event to their calendar. Create a checklist of everything you need to do and purchase, such as food, drinks, decorations, and party favors. Sound like a lot? We can take care of the invites, tableware, decorations and party favors with party in a box.

  2. Set a theme: Let's be honest, most of us are a sucker for a good theme! Whether it's a costume party or a specific theme like "Whole Llama Fun," having a theme will help you plan decorations, music, and even the menu. 3. Consider your space: Make sure your home is equipped to handle the number of guests you're inviting. Consider the flow of your space and plan for designated areas for food and drinks, as well as seating and mingling areas. Pick a couple of focal points for your decorations and don't stress about decorating your whole house.

  4. Make a menu: Decide on a menu that fits the theme and is appropriate for the time of day. Offer a variety of food and drink options, including non-alcoholic beverages for guests who don't drink. If you don't have a huge budget, there is nothing wrong with just having cake or a dessert (best time of day would be after lunch or in the evening).

  5. Plan for entertainment: Whether it's music, games, or a movie, having something to do will keep your guests engaged and having fun.

  6. Hire help if needed: If you're planning a larger party, you could hire a caterer or bartender to help with food and drinks. This will allow you to enjoy your party and spend time with your guests. If you need help with the decorations and tableware, a Custom Party Box would be a perfect fit for you.

  7. Preparing for the unexpected: Even with careful planning, unexpected things can happen. It's always good to have extra food and drinks on hand. If everything doesn't go according to plan, that's okay too! The goal is to have fun with your family and/or friends, so don't sweat the small stuff.

  8. Keeping it clean: Just focus on cleaning the parts of the house where guests will be, the rest of the house can wait. No one will judge you if you just put clutter in a bedroom for quick cleaning. It is good to keep a few cleaning supplies on hand during the party to quickly get to any spills or messes.

  9. Be a good host: Greet each guest as they arrive and introduce them to others. Keep an eye on the party to make sure everyone is comfortable and having a good time.

  10. Send a thank-you note: Old-fashioned? Maybe. People still love a thank you note in the mail or a text with a picture from the party or you using a gift that you or your kid received. It's a small gesture that will go a long way in strengthening your relationships.
